Staff Review: Oliphint offers a user-friendly introduction to presuppositionalism in his new book The Battle Belongs to the Lord: The Power of Scripture for Defending Our Faith. This is the book to give to Christians who know in their heart of hearts that they ought to be involved in the business of defending the faith, but do not know how to proceed or have been scared off by the complex philosophical nature of apologetics. Oliphint demonstrates what we have really known all along: God intends for the regular Christian to do apologetics.

Most Christians are quite willing to allow the philosophically sophisticated "hired guns" to do the work of apologetics, and it is often done without recourse to Scripture since reference to an external authority (apart from human reason) is generally forbidden in philosophical circles, even where Christians are involved. Oliphint begins with an analogy between the Christian’s task of apologetics and the fight between David and Goliath. David fought a giant with whom he was utterly unprepared to deal, at least from a purely human vantage point. But David defeated Goliath because he knew that the battle belonged to the Lord. From that essential biblical insight, Oliphint builds six chapters around six specific Scripture passages. The book is rounded out with two appendices, one on the role of the Holy Spirit in apologetics and a very helpful index of apologetics-oriented Scripture passages.
