Clowney provides a helpful and thought-provoking treatment of the relationship between a Reformed biblical theology and the task of preaching the gospel. He recognizes the problem with understanding biblical theology because of that discipline’s roots in German rationalism and naturalism in which it sought to merely “describe” the content of Scripture and thereby free the Bible from dogmatic and ecclesiastical interpretations. (Karl Barth’s ringing endorsement didn’t help!) But, as Clowney points out, the Reformed approach to biblical theology (as modeled in Vos) affirms the supernatural, inerrant, and infallible nature of divine revelation. God’s revelation is external to man and communicates propositional truth. Biblical theology deals with the revelation of God progressively and covenantally disclosed in historical epochs and deposited in written form in the Bible. This establishes the message of the preacher. The Bible contains not only the record of God’s acts in history, but his authoritative interpretation of those acts as well (contra neo-orthodoxy). Hence the Bible contains the only authoritative and infallible interpretation of God’s saving activity in history that culminates in the person and work of Jesus Christ. It is biblical theology’s sensitivity to the epochal nature of progressive revelation that highlights the radical newness of the advent, death, and resurrection of Christ. Preaching based upon biblical theology must stay attuned to the text and its culmination in Christ. This affirms a deep underlying unity to the Old and New Testaments. Preaching based upon this understanding of biblical theology will proclaim the gospel of a crucified and risen Christ in a consistent and persuasive manner. - Jeff Waddington - Westminster Bookstore Staff |
