Students of Old Princeton's theology have sought after this two volume set for good reason. While not written at the popular level, these articles are less technical than those that appear in Warfield's ten-volume work. The material in this set originally appeared in theological journals, religious periodicals, homiletic reviews, pamphlets, and encyclopedia entries. Warfield treats such topics as "The Bible the Book of Mankind," "Some Thoughts on Predestination," "The Human Development of Jesus," "Christ's Little Ones," and "Is the Shorter Catechism Worthwhile?" Included in this collection are also obituaries for Dutch theologian-statesman Abraham Kuyper and French Bible commentator Frederic Godet, along with Warfield's recollection of Charles Hodge as an exegete. Among the more significant articles in this treasury are "The Religious Life of Theological Students," "Our Seminary Curriculum," "The Right of Systematic Theology," in which he defends the discipline of systematic theology against a view of Christianity as facts with no interpretation or of Christianity as a life without doctrine, and his treatment of religious psychology in "Authority, Intellect, Heart." While there is diversity of content with these articles, there is a unity of excellence that is indicative of Warfield's scholarly endeavors. The reader will come away from these articles knowing that bad theology is counteracted by good theology, not by no theology at all. - Jeff Waddington - Westminster Bookstore Staff
Publisher Review: This anthology of Warfield's most valuable shorter writings is being reprinted by popular demand. In these two volumes, the editor brings together over 100 articles, including, book introductions, book reviews, encyclopedia articles, sermons, and a small book The Right of Systematic Theology. Many selections are less weighty and more practical than those in the larger sets and none of them appear in the five- or ten-volume set of Warfield's works.
