The Returning King unlocks the mysteries of the book of Revelation without spoiling the story. Here we have crystal-clear exposition lit up with flashes of thrilling insight and shafts of penetrating application all rolled into one. And like the book of Revelation itself, The Returning King is all about Jesus and it can be understood by every Christian.
- Sinclair B. Ferguson Distinguished Visiting Professor of Systematic Theology at Westminster Theological Seminary.

Staff Review: Christians ought to be grateful for the publication of The Returning King: A Guide to the Book of Revelation by Westminster Theological Seminary's own Vern Poythress. Students who have taken courses on the book of Revelation with Dr. Poythress will find no surprises here. The book is an expansion of the notes Dr. Poythress wrote for the book of Revelation in the New Geneva Study Bible. Approximately one third of the book is devoted to "Introductory" matters that almost any reader would find helpful, such as issues involving date of composition and authorship, schools of interpretation (preterist, futurist, historicist and idealist) and outlines of the book from various perspectives (major divisions, grammatical patterning, rhetorical structure, cycle patterns and themes). A particularly fascinating aspect of the book is Dr. Poythress' emphasis on satanic counterfeiting in Revelation (especially of the Holy Trinity), which can be seen as the antithesis of belief versus unbelief played out on a cosmic scale.
