Publisher Review: Few books in the New Testament are better known or more often quoted as the Letter of James. Because James is so concise, so intensely practical, and so filled with memorable metaphors and illustrations, it has become one of the two or three most popular New Testament books in the church.
This highly original commentary seeks to make the Letter of James clear and applicable to Christian living today. Interacting with the latest views on James but keeping academic references to a minimum, Douglas Moo first introduces the Letter of James in its historical context and then provides verse-by-verse comments that explain the message of James both to its first readers and to today's church.

About the Author: Douglas J. Moo is Blanchard Professor of New Testament at Wheaton Graduate School.
About the Pillar New Testament Commentary: The Pillar New Testament Commentary, designed for serious readers of the Bible, seeks above all to make clear the meaning of the text of Scripture as we have it. Writers of the PNTC volumes interact with the most important, informed contemporary debate yet avoid undue technical detail. Their ideal is a blend of rigorous exegesis and exposition, scholarship and pastoral sensitivity, with an eye alert both to biblical theology and to the contemporary relevance of the Bible.
"The Pillar New Testament Commentary series is quickly establishing itself as the premier mid-level commentary series on the English text of Scripture but written with full awareness of the Greek and all the key exegetical debates that busy pastors and teachers need to know about. Volumes such as James Edwards on Mark, D. A. Carson on John, David Peterson on Acts, Peter O'Brien on Ephesians, Douglas Moo on Colossians and Philemon and also on James, Gene Green on Thessalonians, Peter Davids on 2 Peter and Jude and Colin Kruse on the Letters of John are as fine as any 'competitors' of the same scope in print. And more of the same quality are continuing to appear." - Craig Blomberg, Denver Seminary

"Douglas Moo is well known to New Testament commentary readers, both for his magisterial volume on Romans inThe New International Commentary on the New Testament and from his excellent little work on James in the Tyndale series. Fully abreast of the latest scholarship on James, Moo here walks readers with remarkable clarity through even complex exegetical issues. He consistently comes to convincing conclusions. As a bonus, he occasionally inserts comments by way of application that reflect his arm pastoral heart. Highly recommended." - Craig L. Blomberg, Denver Seminary
"Sure to stimulate readers' interest int eh 'quest of the historical James', Moo's volume provides illuminating commentary on this important New Testament book. Rich words studies and up-to-date background material -- especially drawn from the Jewish Wisdom tradition -- make this a notable addition to the current literature. Particularly valuable are sections on 'faith and works' and the vexed topic of 'prayer, faith, and healing.' Moo writes clearly and succinctly, and his understanding the theme of James to be 'spiritual wholeness' adds an extra dimension to his academic approach. Whether in the classroom or in the pastor's study, this commentary will be much welcomed and valued." - Ralph P. Martin, Fuller Theological Seminary
"This commentary offers something for everyone: it is simple enough for every Christian believer to benefit from yet profound enough to challenge scholars in their presuppositions and interpretations." - Dean Deppe, Calvin Theological Seminary

Having used his superb commenary on Romans (NICNT), I was glad to see that Douglas Moo had written on James. I'm regularly using eight different commentaries as I preach through the letter, and Moo and Doriani stand neck and neck as the most helpful of the bunch. |

Doug Moo's commentary is my favorite on the book of James. Scholars, students, and serious lay persons will appreciate the careful exegesis of this oft misundestood epistle. See also Dr. Moo's James commentary in the Tyndale series. |
