Publisher Description: What purpose does suffering serve in my life? Is God all-powerful? Isn't he loving and good, particularly toward his children? We all experience suffering, some of us more than others. In fact, if you're a Christian, you've been called to suffer with Christ. But why does it have to hurt? |

"McCartney looks the monster in the eye and, with Bible in hand, gives honest answers to honest questions about suffering. This is a refreshing book. Read it! You'll be glad you did!"

"Dan McCartney's splendid book . . . has all the qualities necessary to help us deal with such a sensi-tive, personal, and often difficult question. It is thoroughly honest and realistic; its approach is marked by Christian wisdom; and above all, it is biblical -- and set out in his clear, readable, and easily followed style. . . . the result is a book which every Christian should read." - Sinclair B. Ferguson
". . . the best treatment of suffering I've read from a Reformed point of view. . . . gripping, practical, encouraging."
- John Bettler
Staff Pick: "Here WTS professor Dan McCartney writes an excellent Biblical and pastoral survey of the problem and experience of suffering. Along with John Bettler I can say that this is "the best treatment of suffering I've read from a Reformed point of view." It is great for individuals and small groups (it includes discussion questions after each of its 10 chapters and it is only 130 pages). Simple, straightforward, and intensely fraught with Biblical wisdom, this book is a good, practical start toward understanding God's purposes and mysteries in suffering."

One of the warmest and most readable treatments of the issue of suffering and evil I have ever read. "Why Does it Have to Hurt" takes an unflinching look into what may be the biggest barrier to faith for unbelievers and cause for dismay among believers. Thoroughly biblical, this wonderful volume never fails to be pastoral as well. Pastors will want to have multiple copies on hand in order to give to those who are struggling. |
