Faculty Review: Occasionally, among the myriads of books for ministers, a work appears so seminal to the preacher's calling it can safely be said: 'This is a must-read.' Such books are not usually 'how-to' manuals. Rather they clear the mind, stir the blood, enflame the heart, and ignite the passions. They set preachers ablaze with renewed zeal to fulfill their ordination vow to do all for the glory of God and the salvation of men. The Supremacy of God in Preaching is such a book. Read it. But carry spiritual oxygen with you; for it will lead you over rugged terrain, on arduous climbs, to a rarefied atmosphere where only true preaching can survive. But in that atmosphere you will begin to long to preach God's greatness, and to see his glory established in your pulpit--and all in a way calculated to bring joyful exhilaration into the nerve center of your ministry. A 'must-read' indeed! - Sinclair Ferguson, Distinguished Professor of Systematic Theology, Westminster Theological Seminary

Staff Review: John Piper has done the church a great service by updating his fine book The Supremacy of God in Preaching. Piper opens his book this way, “More than ever I believe in preaching as a part of worship in the gathered church. Preaching is worship, and it belongs in the regular worship life of the church no matter the size of the church. In the small church it does not become conversation or ‘sharing.’ In the mega-church it does not become hype or jingles. Preaching is worshipping over the Word of God--the text of Scripture--with explanation and exultation.” One wonders what the state of preaching has become when reading these kind of words. Preaching is no doubt ridiculed in some circles as hopelessly out of date. So be it. Piper reminds us that preaching is absolutely central to proper worship. He points out that the goal of preaching is the glory of God, the ground of preaching is the cross of Christ, and the gift of preaching is the Holy Spirit. Readers familiar with Piper’s other books will not be surprised that he draws from the life and ministry of Jonathan Edwards to illustrate the significance of preaching and the necessary elements of the proclamation of the gospel. Worship involves a two-fold essence. Worshippers must see and savor God in Christ. Christians must both understand God with the mind and feel him with the heart; one without the other will yield cold intellectualism or blind emotionalism. Piper has reminded us of what preaching is all about. - Jeff Waddington - Westminster Bookstore Staff
