Faculty Review: One of Luther's great Reformation insights was the theology of the cross—that neither God nor Christian experience match natural human expectations; and that, as God revealed himself on the cross in weakness and suffering, so he manifests himself in the lives of believers in similar fashion. Yet few Protestant theologians have ever really picked up and developed these insights, something which is most surprising as it seems to capture the essence of Pauls' teaching in 1 Corinthians. Thus, it is a pleasure to commend this little book by Don Carson as a must-read for anyone going in to the pastorate and, indeed, forall Christians in general. Through careful exposition and down-to-earth application, Carson digs real gems of pastoral wisdom from Paul and offers a realistic, biblical view of what to expect as a pastor or, indeed, as anyone involved in church leadership of any kind. In a day obsessed with slick technique and personal comfort, this book is a biblical reality-check. - Dr. Carl R. Trueman, Academic Dean of Faculty and Professor of Historical Theology and Church History, Westminster Theological Seminary
Staff Review: New Testament scholar D. A. Carson has reminded us once again of the centrality of the cross not only for redemption (where it is and most certainly ought to be central) but also for ministry. The cross is not only the source of salvation, but also the model for ministry. Carson helpfully unpacks this reality in this fine exposition of aspects of Paul’s first letter to the church at Corinth. While the image of the cross is popular today, adorning church buildings and necklaces, it was in its day a horrible symbol of death by execution, a symbol of evil, torture, and shame. And Christian ministry ought to be understood to stand within the shadow of the cross, that cross in particular. Carson presents a comprehensive view of what the cross means for ministry regarding preaching, the ministry of the Holy Spirit, factionalism in the church, servant leadership, and world Christianity. While this is a relatively brief book, it communicates a profound message. Westminster Theological Seminary’s Carl Trueman says, “This little book on the cross and the Christian ministry is a must-read. By bringing to bear the insights of Paul's theology of the cross on the everyday life and calling of the minister, Carson gives a vital, biblical reality-check to all concerned. Ministry is a glorious calling; but its glory is defined and determined by the nature of the cross. A book to keep—and to give away!” - Jeff Waddington - Westminster Bookstore Staff
Publisher's Description: Is the cross truly the center of your ministry?
Today we commonly see images of the cross adorning churches, dangling from necklaces, and gleaming from lapels. Yet the image that is so sanitized for us today was grotesque and abhorrent to those living in the first century. It was a symbol of evil, torture, and shame. It is this realistic and horrifying view of the cross that should call us to Christian ministry and compel us to share the Good News of Christ's triumph over death.
Through his exposition of 1 Corinthians, D. A. Carson presents a comprehensive view of what the death of Christ means in preaching and ministering to God's people. He confronts the issues of factionalism, servant-leadership, shaping "world" Christians, and the source of knowledge in order to help Christian leaders learn principles for dynamic, cross-centered worship. |
