Faculty Review: One of Luther's great Reformation insights was the theology of the cross—that neither God nor Christian experience match natural human expectations; and that, as God revealed himself on the cross in weakness and suffering, so he manifests himself in the lives of believers in similar fashion. Yet few Protestant theologians have ever really picked up and developed these insights, something which is most surprising as it seems to capture the essence of Pauls' teaching in 1 Corinthians. Staff Review: New Testament scholar D. A. Carson has reminded us once again of the centrality of the cross not only for redemption (where it is and most certainly ought to be central) but also for ministry. The cross is not only the source of salvation, but also the model for ministry. Carson helpfully unpacks this reality in this fine exposition of aspects of Paul's first letter to the church at Corinth. While the image of the cross is popular today, adorning church buildings and necklaces, it was in its day a horrible symbol of death by execution, a symbol of evil, torture, and shame. And Christian ministry ought to be understood to stand within the shadow of the cross, that cross in particular. Carson presents a comprehensive view of what the cross means for ministry regarding preaching, the ministry of the Holy Spirit, factionalism in the church, servant leadership, and world Christianity.
