Staff Review: In his forward to Gaffin's seminal study on Paul's resurrection theology, Sinclair Ferguson reminds us of John Calvin's insight that "our whole salvation and all its parts are comprehended in Christ" (Institutes II.xvi.19). Calvin added his now famous observation that "as long as Christ remains outside us, and we are separated from him, all that he has suffered and done for the salvation of the human race remains useless and of no value for us" (Institutes III.i.1). Ferguson's references to Calvin are significant, because he understands Gaffin's work in this volume as an exegetical substantiation and expansion of Calvin's theology of union with Christ. Two basic observations govern Gaffin's study. First, Paul is himself a theologian of redemptive history, and this means that theology resides in the inscripturated text. Second, there is an organic and fundamental "unity between Christ's resurrection and the resurrection of believers." Gaffin develops the implications of this unity or union with Christ as follows: union with Christ underlies every redemptive blessing in the covenant of grace. To enter by faith into union with Christ involves simultaneous possession of every redemptive benefit available in this age and the age to come. Hence, we receive no benefit apart from union with Christ in his death and resurrection. Of course, this does not undermine the judicial and declarative (and imputational) character of justification, or the renovative and transformative character of sanctification. In other words, the distinct benefits of justification and sanctification accrue simultaneously but are not confused or collapsed into one another. Gaffin's study remains a milestone in the development of soteriology.
