In part two historical and systematic theologians weigh the atonement in the ancient, medieval and Reformation traditions. The primary perspective of the contributors is the Reformed tradition, which is further represented by essays on John Calvin, Herman Bavinck and Karl Barth. A timely capstone to this historical view is a stimulating consideration of the atonement and postmodernism.

Finally, the implications of the atonement are brought home in part three with a look at the atonement in contemporary preaching and Christian living.

The Glory of the Atonement will undoubtedly become a standard treatment of the subject from a generally Reformed perspective. Hill and James have gathered a fine cadre of gifted scholars to honor veteran theologian Roger Nicole. One of Nicole's perennial interests is, of course, the doctrine of the atonement. As the subtitle indicates, the book is divided into three sections dealing with the biblical foundations, theological development, and practical working out of a proper understanding of the work of Christ on the cross. Several Westminster Theological Seminary professors and alumni have contributed chapters to this noteworthy collection. Hill and Jones assembled a group of world-class scholars for this volume in honor of Roger Nicole. "The Glory of the Atonement" is a wide ranging study of Christ's atoning work from a primarily Reformed perspective. The book is divided into three broad categories - biblical, historical, and practical. In the first section, biblical scholars examine the doctrine of the atonement as it is revealed in specific biblical texts. In the historical section, theologians set the doctrine of the atonement in its larger historical and theological setting. Finally in the practical section the implications of the atonement are examined. This is an outstanding volume that I return to frequently. The writers seem never to forget that they are dealing with precious truth and so there is an appropriately doxological spirit to the book. Highly recommended.
