Staff Review: Though it may scandalize his devotees, and the fault likely lies within myself, I find Edwards' writings difficult to enjoy. But, however difficult the literature produced by this biography's subject, Marsden's work is a page-turner.
An example of history-writing at its best, Jonathan Edwards: A Life combines impressive scholarly insight with a storyteller's literary craft. Best of all, Marsden avoids a selective hagiographic approach that avoids Edwards' rough edges. Instead, a living picture emerges of a man who both soared to philosophical and theological heights and also confirmed his quirky apocalyptic views with the current news. - Matthew Harmon, Westminster Bookstore Staff, August 2006 |

Marsden's biography is my favorite on Jonathan Edwards. It is comprehensive but very readable. This is biography done very well. Edwards life and thought are firmly grounded in his time and place. Marsden also gives the reader a sense of Edwards the man with all his strengths and frailties. |
