Beginning from a contemporary film depiction of stereotyped Calvinism, Mouw asks whether Calvinism, rooted as it is in centuries-old theological discussions, has anything to say in the 21st century. Mouw's answer is a definitive "yes—. With some contemporary nuances, he explains and commends the basics of the Canons of Dordt, best known as the five points of Calvinism. At the same time, Mouw recognizes the shortcomings of his tradition and its practitioners that underlie the caricatures of cold, hard Calvinism.
Mouw's defense of Calvinism models both conviction and humility. Admittedly, the resulting broadness in his theological explorations sometimes seem off-target. One unconvincing suggestion is that the Westminster Confessions" reference to those "incapable of being outwardly called by the ministry of the Word" potentially covers the rabbi whose knowledge of Christian persecution of Jews hinders acceptance of the person of Jesus. On the other hand, moments of brilliance include the picture of Las Vegas as a counterfeit New Jerusalem.
