Growing Up Christian is a great book. Karl Graustein gets it! He understands the pitfalls and dangers that track with the rich privilege of growing up in a Christian home. He addresses all the standard temptations; getting ensnared by sin, presuming oneself to be saved, craving for popularity. In winsome, "kid friendly" ways he turns the reader to knowing God, knowing the Bible, solid theology, fellowship with others. This book has a look and feel that young people will appreciate. Much of the teaching is found in engaging interactive text boxes that will make this book a small group leader's dream. I look forward to seeing this book used in the church I serve.

Written for the "forgotten" Christian young people who grow up in Christian families, Growing Up Christian seeks to encourage personal ownership of hand-me-down faith. Graustein's opening section provides teens with reasons to view their upbringing as a gift rather than a burden, while warning of the dangers of presumption. The remaining two-thirds of the book offers beneficial advice for any young person, whether "raised Christian" or not. A principal of a Christian high school, Graustein communicates on a level that any teenager can understand while avoiding the twin pitfalls of either talking down to his audience or trying to sound "cool." Instead, Graustein comes across as the wise older person most teens secretly wish they had in their lives. The book's one deficiency is insufficient emphasis given to life in the church amid all the usual advice for advancing in the Christian life (read your Bible, pray, build good relationships). Overall, though, Growing Up Christian would certainly be a positive influence in the life of any Christian young person. The frequent mini-quizzes in sidebars along with end-of-chapter questions for reflection make this book excellent for studying with either a group or a personal mentor.

This book is a much needed meditation on the unique dangers and blessings of being raised around such precious truth.
Think about it: The blessings of being raised in church are obvious. But the dangers are serious. It is a human tendency to grow disconnected from things that are familiar. Church kids have the huge temptation to neglect these precious truths that they have heard a thousand times.
Karl Graustein serves these church kids well by helping them understand their situation and giving them wise counsel in their fight of faith. Parents, you've got to get this book into the hands of your teenagers. |
