Staff Review: With the publication of the first two volumes in their History Lives series (volume two is Monks and Mystics) the Withrows have given a great gift to the young people of the church (and perhaps to many of us oldsters as well!). Peril and Peace takes the reader on a whirlwind tour through the history of the early church in the form of short, dramatic narratives of the lives of many of the leaders of the early church. Though the authors bring these tales to life through imagined details, they remain true to their meticulous historical research. The result is stories that not only inform about the struggles and victories of the earliest believers, but also inspire faithful living in our own day. Though written for a young audience (the publisher suggests ages 9-14), Peril and Peace is also an enjoyable and informative read for adults who feel a little weak on their early church history. As a wonderful bonus, the book includes several chapters that fill in the background to its stories on such topics as creeds, councils, and how we got our Bible.
For all readers, this book is an important reminder of the "great cloud of witnesses" calling us to endurance in the "race that is set before us" (Hebrews 12:1). - Mark Traphagen, Bookstore Staff, January 2006.
