description
This volume is a collection of articles originally published in The Princeton Repertory and Theological Review between 1830 and 1842 on such issues as sin, grace, salvation, and the rise of revivalism in America. While the material is somewhat dated, these articles contain much that is relevant to our age, as such matters have arisen in recent debates over the nature and sovereignty of God, the freedom of the will, and the relationship of God to time. The articles are by such stalwarts as Charles Hodge, Archibald Alexander, Albert Dodd, and John Woodbridge, devoted to interacting with and responding to the so-called “New Divinity” or New Haven Theology. The theologians of this school understood themselves to be heirs of Jonathan Edwards, and there was frequent and fervent debate between Old Princeton theologians and New England theologians regarding the true core of Edwards’s thought. This collection highlights for the contemporary reader issues of perennial concern and how an earlier generation dealt with them. - Jeff Waddington - Westminster Bookstore Staff
