Staff Reveiw: Hart offers an incisive and groundbreaking analysis of Machen’s significance as a churchman and theologian. Machen, co-founder of Westminster Theological Seminary and the Orthodox Presbyterian Church, is known for his scholarly writings on the origin of Paul’s gospel, the virgin birth of our Lord, and more popular works such as Christianity and Liberalism and What is Faith? Machen was also a stalwart churchman who resisted the inroads of modern unbelief in his beloved Presbyterian church until that church drove him and his colleagues out to establish a true and biblically-based Presbyterian communion. The reader will learn much of value. - Jeff Waddington - Westminster Bookstore Staff
Publisher Review: A study of Machen’s thought and career that says much about the issues that unsettled mainstream Protestantism’s hold on American intellectual and cultural life. |

J. Gresham Machen was the founder of a denomination and Westminster Seminary, a world-class scholar, and champion of Reformed Orthodoxy. He wrote such classic works as "Christianity and Liberalism" and "The Origin of Paul's Religion." He was also at the forefront of a theological and ecclesiastical crisis the effects of which continue to this day. D.G. Hart gives Machen appropriate honor without crossing over into hagiography. In the process we not only learn about Machen's life and thought but about that volatile period of Protestantism in the early years of the 20th century. Highly recommended. |
