After God’s own Heart is an excellent contribution to an important series on the biblical theology of the Old Testament. As Mark Boda shows in this useful and accessible book, the house of David is central to the Bible’s message of salvation. Using a thematic approach that is well informed by careful scholarship, Boda explores David’s many connections to Christ and to the church as the covenant community of David’s Son. - Philip Graham Ryken, Senior Minister, Tenth Presbyterian Church and Board Member, Westminster Theological Seminary.
"With this book, Mark Boda has given the church a priceless treasure. Beginning with Abraham, he takes us on a journey through a succession of familiar biblical narratives to show us the essentials of spiritual leadership and what it means to think, breathe, and live in a manner reflecting God’s own heart. His effective use of literary and background materials causes these stories to take on new and profound significance as he consistently directs our attention to their ultimate reference point—to the anointed One, our Messiah and King, Jesus Christ, and to our privileged position as his anointed community." - Steven C. Horine
"One of the most urgent needs of the church is to grasp how the many parts of the Bible fit together to make one ‘story-line’ that culminates in Jesus Christ. This series of books goes a long way toward meeting that need. Written at a thoughtful but popular level, it deserves wide circulation." - D. A. Carson
"At last a series on the Old Testament designed to provide reliable exposition, biblical theology, and a focus on Christ. These books should be like manna in the desert to pastors, preachers, teachers, and many individual Christians who struggle to come to terms with how to read the Old Testament." - Dr. Sinclair Ferguson, Distinguished Visiting Professor of Systematic Theology, Westminster Theological Seminary

I'm certain that I'm not the only pastor who has found many contemporary commentaries to be exegetically and technically excellent, while theologically impoverished. Such a predicament seems particularly acute among Old Testament commentaries as many scholars struggle to legitimately connect the Hebrew Bible to the Greek New Testament. Such is not the case here! I picked up "After God’s Own Heart" during a sermon series on the life of David and found it immensely helpful. Boda connects the life of David to the life of Jesus, and through Jesus, to the life of every Christian. While accessible for even the newest student of the Bible (I read through the whole book on a single airplane flight), Boda provides a rich theological framework for studying the life of David. A great value for laypeople, seminary students, pastors, and scholars alike, "After God’s Own Heart" also could be used profitably for group studies. Each chapter moves from the text to contemporary application to insightful study questions. Topically arranged and focused upon main themes rather than comprehensive coverage, preachers could usefully supplement with "A Son to Me", Peter Leithart's more expansive exposition of 1 and 2 Samuel. |
