Ridderbos discusses the history of Pauline scholarship and the fundamental structures of Paul's theology in this monumental work. Rejecting the Hegelian understanding of Paul found in F. C. Baur and the Liberal school of H. J. Holtzmann, Ridderbos stresses the eschatological center of Paul's theology that comes to its culmination in Christ. Ridderbos notes that the doctrine of Christ as the eternal image of God, the firstborn over creation, and Christ as the revelation of the mystery of God form the matrix of theological principles at the heart of Paul's theology. From Ridderbos' perspective, the eternal-ontological realm of reality and the redemptive-historical dimension of reality find their binding center in Christ. Hence, Paul is not merely engaging in historical reconstruction of Israel's identity; rather, he is proclaiming the historical manifestation of the eternal Son of God. Another important aspect of Ridderbos' work is his discussion of Paul's elaboration of the indicative and imperative. The indicative is the accomplishment and application of redemption, which issues in the imperative to walk in a manner worthy of the heavenly calling in Christ. The key point: the indicative always and at every point underlies and frames the imperative. Ridderbos' Paul: An Outline of His Theology is invaluable for grasping the basics of Pauline theology. - Jeff Waddington - Westminster Bookstore Staff
