Body of Divinity, Hardback

Body of Divinity, Hardback

5 Stars By T. Pruitt on April 4, 2009
(Church of the Saviour / Senior Teaching Pastor / PA)
Thomas Watson's masterful commentary on the Shorter Catechism is a model of theology that is at once devotional and doxological. A Body of Divinity is my favorite of all the Puritan classics. It has been and continues to be a regular presence in my practice of devotions.
Five English Reformers

Five English Reformers

5 Stars By T. Pruitt on April 4, 2009
(Church of the Saviour / Senior Teaching Pastor / PA)
Originally part of a larger volume, Bishop Ryle's "Five English Reformers" is a sobering and ultimately inspiring account of some of the men who offered up their lives in defense of the biblical gospel in 16th century England. These wonderful biographical sketches will remind the reader of the courage and sacrifice required to uphold truth. This little book not only calls me to attention for the sake of the gospel but is a remedy for my impulses toward self-pity.

Deserted by God?

5 Stars By T. Pruitt on April 4, 2009
(Church of the Saviour / Senior Teaching Pastor / PA)
What pastor has not ministered to men and women struggling with the perceived absence of God? In "Deserted by God?" Sinclair Ferguson serves as a tender and faithful guide through those Psalms where the psalmist lifts up cries of abandonment. This book is enormously helpful for any Christian who is struggling with pain and loss. They will be reminded that even in their suffering God will never leave nor abandon them. I have probably given away more copies of this book that any other.
Christianity and Liberalism (Paperback)

Christianity and Liberalism (Paperback)

5 Stars By T. Pruitt on April 4, 2009
(Church of the Saviour / Senior Teaching Pastor / PA)
Some books are very much of their time and therefore serve a temporary purpose. Other books however prove to be consistently relevant. Although published about 70 years ago "Chrstianity and Liberalism" reads as though it could have been written in our own day. Machen effectively demonstrates that liberalism, far from biblical Christianity, is effectively a different religion altogether.

"Instruments in the Redeemer's Hands" makes my list of the five books I wish every church member would read. It is the most helpful book I have ever read regarding practical ministry and providing pastoral guidance. But don't think this book is just for pastors. It is for everyone who knows that Christianity is a community project and that God's Word is sufficient for all we need in life and godliness.

Doug Moo's commentary on Romans is the gold standard of Romans commentaries. It has proven to be a worthy successor to John Murray's classic work in this same series. Every serious student or preacher of Romans should have Dr. Moo's commentary at the ready.
Christian Life: A Doctrinal Introduction

Christian Life: A Doctrinal Introduction

5 Stars By T. Pruitt on April 4, 2009
(Church of the Saviour / Senior Teaching Pastor / PA)
"The Christian Life" is on my list of five books I wish every Christian would read. It is one of the clearest examples I know of the practicality of theology. The Christian life is not a series of spiritual techniques or helpful tips for living. Rather, as Dr. Ferguson demonstrates, the Christian life begins with Whom and what we believe. But far from lifeless dogma, Christian doctrine is dynamic, yielding a harvest of righteousness.

Faithful God: An Exposition of the Book of Ruth

5 Stars By T. Pruitt on April 4, 2009
(Church of the Saviour / Senior Teaching Pastor / PA)
Sinclair Ferguson's "Faithful God" is my favorite work on Ruth. The small size of this volume is a contrast to its grand theology. Ferguson demonstrates how this simple story of a single family in Palestine points us to the character and accomplishments of God with a steady eye toward our great salvation in the Lord Jesus. It is perfect for preachers and lay persons alike.

Cross and Christian Ministry: Leadership Lessons from 1 Corinthians

5 Stars By T. Pruitt on April 4, 2009
(Church of the Saviour / Senior Teaching Pastor / PA)
This wonderful little book has served as a kind of compass for me in pastoral ministry. Don Carson's careful expositions from 1 Corinthians put the lie to any notion that ministry ought to be comfortable or prestigious. He demonstrates how the cross is the guiding motif for those called to shepherd the flock of God. Carson shows how the cross speaks to issues such as leadership, factionalism, and preaching. This is a must for anyone interested in serving the body of Christ.

Numbers is one of those books that Christians and preachers often avoid. Iain Duguid shows us what we have been missing. Through his characteristic mastery of interpreting and explaining the text Dr. Duguid demonstrates the role this oft neglected book plays in the unfolding of God's redemptive plan in Christ Jesus. Highly recommended.

Whiter Than Snow: Meditations on Sin and Mercy (Paperback)

5 Stars By T. Pruitt on May 5, 2009

Where sin abounds grace abounds all the more. In a sense this is the story of the Christian's life. In "Whiter Than Snow" Paul Tripp walks us through the words of a man wrestling with the aftermath of his own sin. These meditations on Psalm 51 deal honestly with the darkness of our sin so that the light of the gospel of grace might be seen all the more clearly. Good medicine for a sinner's soul.

God never promises His people a painless existence. Indeed, Jesus promised His disciples that they would have trouble in this life. What a contrast to the empty promises that are often heard from some corners of contemporary evangelicalism. With doctrinal precision and pastoral warmth Michael Horton reminds us that glory does not come before the cross. Horton demonstrates that Christ's pattern of cross and resurrection offers a real and better hope than the hype and empty promises of religious fads.

5 Stars By T. Pruitt on May 5, 2009

Is there anything purposeful about our suffering? Are our losses random and meaningless? The great Puritan Thomas Watson knew what it was to suffer. In this classic work the 17th century pastor offers a series of meditations on "the divine cordial" of Romans 8:28. The reader is comforted with the reality that God works all things, even suffering, together for good for those who love Him and are the called according to His purpose.

Defending the Faith: J. Gresham Machen and the Crisis of Conservative Protestant

5 Stars By T. Pruitt on May 5, 2009
(Church of the Saviour / Senior Teaching Pastor / PA)
J. Gresham Machen was the founder of a denomination and Westminster Seminary, a world-class scholar, and champion of Reformed Orthodoxy. He wrote such classic works as "Christianity and Liberalism" and "The Origin of Paul's Religion." He was also at the forefront of a theological and ecclesiastical crisis the effects of which continue to this day. D.G. Hart gives Machen appropriate honor without crossing over into hagiography. In the process we not only learn about Machen's life and thought but about that volatile period of Protestantism in the early years of the 20th century. Highly recommended.

While some are busily redefining and re-imagining the Gospel Iain Murray reminds us that the Gospel revealed clearly in Scripture is ageless and always relevant. "The Old Evangelicalism" refreshed my soul and filled me with a sense of wonder as I considered God's grace. This is doxological and devotional theology done in the best tradition of the old Puritans.

With so many books available on the subject of drepression it is difficult to know where to turn for sound, practical help. Ed Welch's "Depression - A Stubborn Darkness" is without question the most helpful volume on this difficult topic that I have read. Welch is compassionate, deeply insightful, and, as always, profoundly biblical in his approach. All readers will be helped by this wonderful book.

The role of men and women within the church continues to be an occasion of controversy. In this collection of essays and expositions more than 20 scholars, pastors, and teachers examine and apply those texts of Scripture which speak to gender roles within the family and the church. The result is a formidable and convincing defense of complimentarianism.

"Ancient Word, Changing Worlds" has come at the right time. As the doctrine of Scripture is once again center stage within evangelicalism Nichols and Brandt offer a most helpful and readable volume. The authors structure their book around three key words realted to the doctrine of Scripture: inspiration, inerrancy, and interpretation. It is one of best reviews I have read of the historical affirmation of Scripture's infallibility and inerrancy.

(Church of the Saviour / Senior Teaching Pastor / PA)
Did God save us because of He knew we would believe or did He save us based upon the mystery of His own sovereign will? These are important questions. The doctrine of election continues to be a hot spot of controversy in the church. Often times the idea of God's sovereignty in the salvation of His people is dismissed on the basis of misunderstandings. Thankfully, in "Chosen for Life" Sam Storms has given us one of the most effective explanations of the doctrine of God's sovereign election. If you are wanting to understand this important doctrine then I can think of no better place for you to begin your study. "Chosen for Life" will also be helpful for those wanting to teach on the doctrine of election.

Iain Murray's impressive two-volume work on Lloyd-Jones is my favorite biography. Why did this young doctor with an already prestigious career leave London to pastor in a lowly Welsh village? How did he become one of the most important expositors and evangelical leaders of the 20th century? What gave him the courage to face controversy and criticism? The life of Lloyd-Jones continues to challenge and encourage. I continue to mine these wonderful volumes for buried treasure.

Not only is it impossible for theology to be divorced from hermeneutics, the two should not be separated. Goldsworthy effectively demonstrates how our understanding of Scripture must be shaped by God's redemptive work through the Lord Jesus. Many errors would be avoided if we practiced this well. Highly recommended for instruction in the church.

One of the things I appreciate about "A Call to Spiritual Reformation" by Don Carson is that we are reminded that the Bible actually teaches us to pray. We do not need to search out mystical paths or discover a new methodology. In this deeply pastoral volume Dr. Carson takes us to the prayers of the apostle Paul that we might pray with confidence in and affection toward God. Highly recommended.

"The Great Work of the Gospel" begins with the bad news of human sin and corruption. John Ensor does not skip over or sugar coat the depravity of the unregenerate heart. But this is precisely why the Gospel of God's grace in Jesus Christ shines so brightly in this beautiful book. This is not a book I read once and then put away. My copy is dog eared and beaten up from being turned to so often. Ensor helps us rejoice in the forgiveness purchased for us by our Savior.

Preach Christ from all the Scriptures. "Him We Proclaim" may be the most helpful thing I have read on this vital subject. Dr. Johnson demonstrates that a redemptive historical understanding of the Bible is not an artificial framework forced upon Scripture. Rather it is the logic that guided the preaching of Jesus and the apostles. "Him We Proclaim" is also a wonderfully practical guide to keeping Christ at the center of your sermons. This is one of those books you read and then read again.

Dr. Carl Trueman gives us a wonderful gift in this careful study of the thought and times of England's greatest theologian. One of the marks of Trueman's skill as a fine writer of history is the thoroughness of this slim volume. Particular attention is given to Owen's understanding of epistomology, covenant, and justification. Also of great interest was the impact upon Owen of the dramatic politics of 17th century England. If you want a deeper understanding of John Owen and his place in the history of theological development then I can think of no better volume.

When Helping Hurts: How to Alleviate Poverty Without Hurting the Poor...and Yourself (Paperback)

5 Stars By T. Pruitt on August 8, 2009
(Church of the Saviour / Senior Teaching Pastor / PA)
Without a doubt, "When Helping Hurts" is the most helpful book I have read on the church's responsibility to the poor. The authors argue that poverty is ultimately an absence of shalom, the breakdown of our relationships with God and others. In this way the writers see poverty as first and foremost a God-ward issue that is grounded in the fall. In this sense we are all suffering from one sort of poverty or another. There are some important warnings therefore against paternalism and pride. The book has no political ax to grind. Indeed the writers argue that we must see both individual sin and systematic failures as playing a role in poverty. In so doing the authors shed needed light on the complexity of poverty - "Not all povery is created equal." Along the way they address those approaches to alleviating poverty that have been unhelpful and in some cases harmful. The author's solutions are grounded in the understanding that God has created people to be productive. In this way men and women possess a dignity that, among the entire created order, belongs to humanity alone. Proper poverty alleviation, therefore, will help restore men and women to their God-given role as faithful stewards over the assets of creation and not merely recipients of other people's productivity. "When Helping Hurts" is biblical, frankly honest, merciful in tone, and practical. Each chapter is interactive and therefore ideal for group study. Pastors, elders, deacons, and any thoughtful lay person ought to make it a priority to read this book.

(Church of the Saviour / Senior Teaching Pastor / PA)
Hill and Jones assembled a group of world-class scholars for this volume in honor of Roger Nicole. "The Glory of the Atonement" is a wide ranging study of Christ's atoning work from a primarily Reformed perspective. The book is divided into three broad categories - biblical, historical, and practical. In the first section, biblical scholars examine the doctrine of the atonement as it is revealed in specific biblical texts. In the historical section, theologians set the doctrine of the atonement in its larger historical and theological setting. Finally in the practical section the implications of the atonement are examined. This is an outstanding volume that I return to frequently. The writers seem never to forget that they are dealing with precious truth and so there is an appropriately doxological spirit to the book. Highly recommended.

"Words of Life" is an outstanding contribution to the current discussion of the doctrine of Scripture. Perhaps the most helpful feature of Ward's book is that he grounds the doctrine of Scripture in the doctrine of God. Another strength is that Ward supports and defends a classic view of Scripture in a way that seems entirely fresh and new. This may well be the first book to which I point people who are seeking to understand what it is to hold a biblical and historically orthodox understanding of Scripture. "Words of Life" is a vibrant and readable volume. Highly recommended!

Paul Tripp has once again written a book which is both warmly pastoral and profoundly committed to the Scriptures. With unflinching honesty Tripp reminds us that we are broken people and will thus not have on earth what God has only promised for heaven. However, God has a deep resevoir of grace for His people as we live in this broken world. True to form, Tripp always helps us to see the practical connections between life and doctrine. And this he does so well in "Broken-Down House." His chapters under the heading of "Doing" will be worth reviewing again and again.

"Christ-Centered Worship" begins by reviewing the history of Christian worship before suggesting a course forward. This is helpful on its own. But Chapell goes on to show how the Gospel is the supreme reality to which the church's worship must be conformed. But "Christ-Centered Worship" is far from mere theory. Chapell includes examples of worship services that properly honor God by making much of the Gospel. This may be the best resource available for the worship leader. It seems that far too little thought has been given over to the rich ecclesiology found in the book of Hebrews. Those familiar with Robertson's work will not be surprised that "God's People in the Wilderness" is characterized by careful exegesis of Scripture and profound theological insights. Here is an excellent study of the Old Covenant roots of God's New Covenant people. But this is not mere scholarship. Graham Cole's "God the Peacemaker" is one of the best books I have read on the doctrine of the atonement. Indeed it is one of my favorite books to be published in 2009. It is a fitting volume in the excellent New Studies in Biblical Theology series (NSBT). Cole's subject is vital. Is there a more pressing issue for humanity than God's atoning work in Christ? Cole agrees with Denney that the cross, "is the focus of revelation, and any construction of Christianity which ignores or denies this distorts Christianity by putting it out of focus." Cole aims to demonstrate the breadth of the doctrine of atonement. He does so by adopting Paul's "theological vision" of the cosmic scope of the cross expressed in Colossians one. The structure of "God the Peacemaker" is to demonstrate the 1) individual, 2) ecclesiological, and 3) cosmic implications of the cross. The book ends with a helpful appendix on controversial issues surrounding the doctrine of atonement. Coles accomplishes this in what is a surprisingly accessable book. I say "accessable" because many of the volumes in the NSBT series are profitable primarily for those with seminary training. There is certainly an important role for technical theological studies. But without sacrificing scholarly integrity Coles has given us a book that an informed layperson could read with great benefit.

5 Stars By T. Pruitt on July 7, 2010

Marks of the Messenger by J. Mack Stiles just may become my new “go-to” book for evangelism. It may be that this book is helpful precisely because its author has for years integrated his profession with a strong sense of responsibility to advance the Gospel. Currently, Stiles lives in the United Arab Emirates where he serves as CEO of Gulf Digital Solutions and is general secretary for the Fellowship of Christian UAE students (FOCUS). The goal of Marks of the Messenger is to make the reader a better evangelist. I suppose that is the target toward which all books on evangelism aim. But through biblical fidelity and shear simplicity I think Stiles’ book may actually accomplish this for many. Nowhere does one get the idea that Stiles is some sort of superhuman witnessing machine. This is helpful for those of us who are quite sure we do not possess a “gift” for evangelism but nevertheless desire to be better witnesses. Stiles’ goal, thankfully, is not to give us yet another “fresh approach” to evangelism. In fact, for one looking for that new method which will finally make him a good witness, this is not your book. And I write that as a way of commending Marks of the Messenger. The title alone should be an indication that what Stiles is targeting is not our methods but us. Marks of the Messenger will be helpful for any Christian who desires to be a more faithful witness for Christ. I would recommend it for small groups even though there are no discussion questions. A good leader will have no problem designing a fruitful discussion from the pages of this excellent book.

One of the things I liked immediately about "Risking the Truth" was its unique format. Martin Downes assembled an oustanding 'cast of characters' to deal with the issues he raises. In a series of thought provoking interviews Downes explores some of the ways error snakes its way into the church and what are the appropriate responses to this reality. One of the unifying characteristics is the challenge of jealously guarding the church against error while seeking to love and restore those who err. Pastors and elders in particular will benefit from this book. But I highly recommend this book for lay persons as a means to equip them with an understanding of what is required to properly guard the flock of God.

In the 1990’s, my first years in vocational ministry, a book explaining the value of and offering strategies for implementing catechesis would have been ignored or even mocked as hopelessly irrelevant. Thankfully, things have changed. Even George Barna, one of the men most responsible for the popularization of pragmatism in the church, is lamenting the lack of biblical literacy and worldview among so-called evangelicals. So it seems that the soil is prepared for such a book as Grounded in the Gospel. In this excellent book, J.I. Packer and Gary Parrett begin by explaining the biblical foundations for catechesis. In fact, after reading the first two chapters of Grounded in the Gospel it would be difficult to argue that catechesis is anything less than the biblical norm for making disciples. “Catechesis,” write the authors, “is not concerned with novelty – certainly not in terms of content. It is concerned, rather, with faithfulness in both learning and teaching the things of God” (p.42). Packer and Parrett move from history to explanation to application in their vision to see catechesis restored to the body of Christ. Anyone would benefit from reading Grounded in the Gospel for this is no dry exercise in educational theory within the church. Rather it is a thoroughly informed and passionate plea to fully comprehend the essence and faithfully apply the implications of the Gospel. Pastors, elders, and parents will benefit especially from the vision and strategy of this timely and important book.
