Summer Reading Staff Picks
Whether it’s a family road trip, beach day, or the end of a semester of textbook reading, summer is a time to relax and pick up a good book. Our staff has put together a list of top titles for older and younger readers that we think are worth your time this summer. - Browse Reading List
Rembrandt is in the Wind - Rembrandt Is in the Wind by Russ Ramsey is an invitation to discover some of the world's most celebrated artists and works, while presenting the gospel of Christ in a way that speaks to the struggles and longings common to the human experience.
an Gogh’s heartbreaking sense of futility, the cracks in Michaelangelo’s David, Lilias Trotter’s sacrificial obedience to God—these are a few of the stories that hit home for me in Russ Ramsey’s Rembrandt is in the Wind. Part art history, part biblical study, part meditation on the human experience, this book is filled with gripping narratives of artists and their work, all told through the lens of faith. Dr. William Edgar, professor of apologetics, has written “The artistic endeavor is one of many proofs for the wisdom of God.” Whether you’re an art-lover, or (like me) someone who just enjoys well-told stories, Rembrandt is the Wind will help you make sense of beauty in this broken world through the God who redeems. - Faith Chang
Orthodoxy - G.K Chesterton, Trevin Wax
ne of my favorite novels that I return to year after year is the little-known, The Napoleon of Notting Hill— the debut novel of G.K. Chesterton. With deep allegorical imagery and absolutely hilarious storytelling, I instantly fell in love with the writing of Chesterton when I first picked it up years ago. Chesterton shows that a convincing argument can be made without abandoning creativity, wit, and humor. Perhaps no book demonstrates this writing better than his most famous apologetic work, Orthodoxy. Within his efforts to seek out a new religion to make sense of the chaos in the world, Chesterton discovers that it’s a Christian worldview that actually makes the most sense of all. This beautifully-bound edition with helpful annotations and a guided reading by Trevin Wax is a great excuse to pick up this classic defense of the Christian faith.
Invitations to Abundance - Alicia Akins
Invitations to Abundance is as much a book about the role of feasting in Scripture as it is a book about communion, both with one another and with God. Akins sets a table for the reader and then welcomes them to savor the feasts seen throughout the Bible as demonstrations of how the Lord lavishly provides blessings for his people in the midst of hardships. By writing with both orthodox rigor and beautiful prose with moments for pause and reflection, Akins deflty demonstrates that theology should lead to doxology. It is a much-needed invitation for anyone hungry or weary. Come and feast!
The Serpent Slayer and the Scroll of Riddles (The Kámbur Chronicles) - Champ Thornton, Any Naselli, Dana Thompson
The Serpent Slayer - On our recent family road trip, I packed a bag of books for my kids to read in between audiobooks and this was the first book my 8-year-old son grabbed. He devoured it in hours and has already picked it up for a re-read. We had great conversations on the road about the Biblical stories that the kids in the book found themselves plopped into and the overarching story of redemption in the Bible. It’s no exaggeration to say that there is a shortage of engaging and biblically rooted fiction for tweens. I’m excited to recommend this book for young readers this summer. My son also wanted me to say, “It’s really great!”
