The Supremacy of God in Preaching: Revised and Expanded Edition
Related: Free online course, The Preaching Class, by John Piper and Desiring God
A Revised and Expanded Edition of John Piper's Enduring Work
People are starving for the greatness of God. Where will their souls be fed? Can they say, "I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory"? As we look out over the wasteland of a secular society, do we not ask, "Who but Christian preachers will say to the people, 'Behold your God!'?" Who will paint for them the landscape of God's grandeur? Who will remind them with tales of wonder that God has triumphed over every foe? Who will cry out above every crisis, "Your God reigns!"?
John Piper pleads for preachers to make the supremacy of God the bracing air of their sermons. He longs to see a new generation of preachers, and a revived band of seasoned brothers, set aflame with the grandeur of God--his glory as the goal of preaching, his cross as the ground of preaching, his Spirit as the power of preaching.
It is fitting that The Supremacy of God in Preaching now appears in hardcover for the first time. It has proven to be an enduring work through the decades.
John Piper serves as founder and lead teacher at Desiring God and is chancellor of Bethlehem College & Seminary. For 33 years, Piper served as pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church. He has authored more than 50 books, and more than 30 years of his preaching and writing are available free of charge at desiringGod.org. Piper resides in the Minneapolis area with his wife of 51 years, and has five children and 14 grandchildren.
Endorsements (${ productEndorsements.length })
“Here’s a book that every preacher should read at least once a year. This book is a powerful antidote to the unbalanced, self-centered preaching of today.”
Erwin W. Lutzer
Pastor Emeritus, The Moody Church, Chicago
“This book calls us back to a biblical standard for preaching, a standard exemplified by many of the pulpit giants of the past, especially Jonathan Edwards and Charles Spurgeon.”
Warren W. Wiersbe
Former General Director, Back to the Bible
“The Bible is not a book of practical suggestions on how to live a better adjusted life. The Bible is a revelation of God. The Supremacy of God in Preaching reminds preachers of what we easily forget to our peril and the peril of the people in our care.”
Haddon Robinson
Former Professor of Preaching, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary
“Occasionally, among the myriad of books for ministers, a work appears so seminal to the preacher’s calling that it can safely be said: ‘This is a must-read.’ The Supremacy of God in Preaching is such a book.”
Sinclair B. Ferguson
Chancellor’s Professor of Systematic Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary; Teaching Fellow, Ligonier Ministries
“The Supremacy of God in Preaching is one of the few truly indispensable books on gospel ministry.”
Philip Graham Ryken
President, Wheaton College
“John Piper passionately and prophetically calls all preachers to make God supreme over any method and in every message. The plan is too simple for a fallen world to notice and too powerful for a faithful preacher to ignore.”
Bryan Chapell
Pastor Emeritus, Grace Presbyterian Church, Peoria, Illinois
