About the Author

J. R. R. Tolkien was born on January 3, 1892. Apart from his long and distinguished academic career, he is best known for his extraordinary works of fiction The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion. His books have been translated into more than forty languages. He died in 1973 at the age of eighty-one.
