When the light of the gospel enters the soul it brings with it a supernatural power that radically transforms the whole of life. This change is perhaps no more clearly seen than in the relationships between husbands and wives, parents and children. Our age has witnessed an almost total collapse of the family unit, and in many places the majority of children are now being raised in ‘broken homes’. Our society presents Christian parents and children with a unique opportunity of bearing witness to God’s love by just being different. This short book holds five sermons preached by Dr. Lloyd-Jones as part of his exposition of Ephesians. The passage covered, Ephesians 6:1-4, deals with the relationships within the family. We particularly appreciated the chapter on “Discipline and the Modern Mind.” Dr. Lloyd-Jones places the biblical teaching in the context of Western culture’s past errors in the concept of disciplining children, and the subsequent backlash into opposite errors. Strikingly, though this was preached more than twenty-five years ago, our culture’s present mindset has not changed from the one described by Lloyd-Jones.
