"This is the best book on marriage I have ever read." Paul D. Tripp, President of Paul Tripp Ministries and Adjunct Professor of Practical Theology, Westminster Theological Seminary
Marriage is the union of two people who arrive at the altar toting some surprisingly large luggage. Often it gets opened right there on the honeymoon, sometimes it waits for the week after. The Bible calls it sin and understanding its influence can make all the difference for a man and woman who are building a life together. Dave Harvey's When Sinners Say "I Do" is about encountering the life-transforming power of the gospel in the unpredictable journey of marriage.
Dave's writing style embraces the reader as he speaks honestly, and sometimes humorously, about sin and the power of the gospel to overcome it. He opens the delightful truth of God's word and encourages the reader to see more clearly the glorious picture of what God does when sinners say "I do".

"Dave Harvey skillfully exposes the real root of most marriage problems—each spouse is still a sinner. But he doesn't leave us to wallow in our sin. He shows the way out through the ongoing power of the gospel. This book will be helpful for any married couple whether they've been married five weeks or fifty years." Jerry Bridges, author of The Pursuit of Holiness
"Dave Harvey not only offers a biblical diagnosis of marital strife, but prescribes the cure as well - the gospel. When Sinners Say "I Do" provides clarity in conflict, hope in despair, and points the way to a joy-filled, God glorifying marriage." C.J. Mahaney, author of Humility
"This is a wonderful book. It is honest, refreshing, practical, and above all biblical. These carefully written pages spill over with truth and grace. This book is liberating and Christ-centered, pointing the way to God-empowered marriage."
Randy Alcorn, author of Heaven
Staff Pick: "This book is destined to become a classic. Dave Harvey has done for the subject of marriage with When Sinners Say I Do what Tedd Tripp did for parenting with Shepherding a Child's Heart—he has resisted the urge merely to rattle off a series of techniques and principles and has sought rather to apply the gospel to every aspect of marriage. He does this in an engaging, conversational style that reads easily and is punctuated with applicable and moving illustrations of the gospel's relevance to your marriage. I wish every married couple, and every couple preparing for marriage, would read this book. My wife and I are sure to read it again and again." Jim Weidenaar, Westminster Bookstore Staff, Phd Candidate, Westminster Theological Seminary See all of Jim's Staff Picks
Faculty Recommendation: "I read this book on marriage and this an honest impression of mine: it blew me away. I was very glad to write the foreword to this book because it was probably one of the most honest looks at the joys and struggles of marriage, a marriage between two flawed people who are living in a fallen world who are the sons and daughters of a faithful God. You're selling yourself short if you don't read this book. Don't read it only if you're married. Everyone should read this book because it has so much to say about the struggles that happen when sinners live near sinners; and how God rescues us by His grace and gives us the possibility of having good relationships...This is the best book on marriage I have ever read." Paul D. Tripp, President of Paul Tripp Ministries and Adjunct Professor of Practical Theology, Westminster Theological Seminary

I have given pre-marriage counseling to approximately 25 couples. Some of the books I've had these young couples read have been better than others. While so many have been strong on practical application, I have almost always felt the need to supplement them with a strong dose of gospel. Usually I have just devoted a session to closing the book and spending our time going through the Scriptures to delve into the wonders of the gospel.
But the last three couples I have worked with have all read Dave Harvey's book, and I no longer need to "add a little gospel.
Let me say emphatically- it is the best book on marriage I have ever read- period! An illustration in the first chapter sufficiently captures the spirit of the whole book. Harvey talks about how often he does not fasten the top button of a his shirts in the proper hole. What's the result, the whole shirt is wrong. The analogy is brilliantly simple: God is the top button. If we get Him wrong, our marriages don't stand a chance.
Harvey wonderfully applies the centrality of God and God's gospel to marriage. It is simply outstanding. I could not give it a higher recommendation. |
