The God Contest: The True Story of Elijah, Jesus, and the Greatest Victory (Tales That Tell the Truth)
Carl Laferton Reads "The God Contest"
Carl Laferton Explains Why He Wrote The God Contest
Kids today are faced with a huge range of different views on who God is (or isn't). How can they be sure who's got it right?
This beautifully illustrated hardback storybook for children aged 3-6 is written by the team behind The Garden, the Curtain and the Cross. It retells two extraordinary events in history when the God of the Bible proved himself to be the one true God.
First it takes children back to Elijah's time and the gripping God contest between the God of the Bible, Yahweh, and the false god Baal. Then it fast-forwards to a different mountain and another God contest at an empty tomb.
Once the evidence is examined, it invites kids, in a world of so many options, to decide with confidence to join Team Jesus.
Westminster Bookstore Note: This book contains cartoon or artistic images of Jesus. There are many people in our constituency who, in a sincere effort to honor the second commandment, refrain from the use of any kind of drawings or pictures of Jesus, even if not intended for a worship context. Out of respect for those who take this position, we have sought to add a note to books in our children’s category which have drawings or depictions of Jesus so that they can factor that into their buying decisions, as they would if they could inspect the books physically.
Carl Laferton is Editorial Director at The Good Book Company and is a member of Grace Church Worcester Park, London. He is the best-selling author of The Garden, the Curtain and the Cross and God's Big Promises Bible Storybook, and also serves as series editor of the God's Word for You series. Before joining TGBC, he worked as a journalist and then as a teacher, and pastored a congregation in Hull. Carl is married to Lizzie, and they have two children. He studied history at Oxford University.
Catalina Echeverri is a Colombian freelance illustrator specialising in children's books. She is based in London, UK, and illustrated the best-selling The Garden, The Curtain and the Cross.
Endorsements (${ productEndorsements.length })
“I really like this little book, it very clearly captures the spirit of 1 Kings 18. The Biblical theology is sound, and while it focuses singularly on the 'Christus Victor' theme of the cross and resurrection, it could be argued that this is often underplayed in Gospel presentations–especially for kids. In our CSB translation committee, sometimes we tried to avoid making the translation say everything by reminding ourselves that ‘we have to leave something for the pastors to do’. It’s important to let a particular Biblical text say what it is saying, and allow Systematic Theologians to remind us later that other parts of the Bible tell us other, complementary truths. David Powlison called it ‘unbalancing truth for the sake of ministry’. The God Contest really captures what’s going on in the Elijah story, and makes its message understandable for children.”

Professor, Westminster Theological Seminary
“This has rapidly become one of the most beloved books in our home. My kids loved it and asked me to read it over and over again!”
Laura Wifler
Founder and Executive Director, Risen Motherhood
“When it comes to telling kids how wonderful, powerful and real God is, my friend Carl takes the prize—and he does it with words that sing and shine the truth. Even the whimsical illustrations grip the imagination! The God Contest will indelibly impress the timeless story of Elijah on Mt. Carmel upon the heart of every young reader. I love this book, and I give it a double thumbs-up!”

“Good children’s books are easy for everyone to understand. The best children’s books leave everyone (the reader and the one being read to) in awe. That’s what The God Contest does. It’s not just the truth that shines through; it’s the beauty. This is how we cultivate the seeds of faith in the soil of our children’s hearts.”
John Onwuchekwa
Lead Pastor, Cornerstone Church Atlanta; Author, Prayer
“Superb storytelling, fantastic illustrations, and a message every parent will want their kids to hear. I’m not sure who will love it more—your kids hearing it, or you reading it to them!”
J.D. Greear
President, the Southern Baptist Convention
“A child’s experience in seasons of uncertainty may differ than that of an adult, though we all need to rest in the same assurance: Christ is victorious. The God Contest serves all of us in these beautifully illustrated and faithfully retold accounts of how God demonstrates his mighty power for his glory and our eternal good.”
Gloria Furman
Author, Missional Motherhood and Labor With Hope
“A bright and lively version of one of the most dramatic stories in the Bible, with super illustrations and a great punchline. What’s not to like?!”
