About the Author

David Dickson was an ordained elder in 19th-century Scotland. At age 30 he was ordained as an elder in the Free New North Church, and he served as clerk of session for 33 years. His practical experiences as an elder led him to publish The Elder and His Work.

About the Editors

George Kennedy McFarland (PhD, Bryn Mawr College) has been an elder for more than 25 years at Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia. He is dean of the faculty and history teacher at Delaware County Christian School.

Philip Graham Ryken Philip Graham Ryken (DPhil, University of Oxford) is President of Wheaton College and, prior to that, served as senior minister at Philadelphia's historic Tenth Presbyterian Church. He has written or edited over 30 books and has lectured and taught at universities and seminaries worldwide. Dr. Ryken and his wife, Lisa, live in Wheaton and have five children.
