Goodbye to Goodbyes: A True Story about Jesus, Lazarus, and an Empty Tomb (Tales That Tell the Truth)
Jesus knew how scary it is when someone gets really sick. He knew how sad it is when someone dies. Jesus cried when his friend, Lazarus, died. But he did something at his friend's tomb that changed everything. He showed that he came to give his friends life in the land that lies after our dying.
In this vivid, moving and exciting retelling of the story of Lazarus, Lauren Chandler helps children understand how Jesus makes all the difference to death. Children will see that because Jesus rose from death, he has power over it and all who believe in him will also rise, just as Lazarus did.
The author, Lauren Chandler, used the story of Lazarus to help her own children come to terms with her husband's (Matt Chandler) brain tumor. Whether children are coming to terms with the illness or death of a loved one, or simply fearful of when that day might come, this book reassures them with the amazing truth that Jesus came to say goodbye to "goodbyes" forever.
Westminster Bookstore Note: This book contains cartoon or artistic images of Jesus. There are many people in our constituency who, in a sincere effort to honor the second commandment, refrain from the use of any kind of drawings or pictures of Jesus, even if not intended for a worship context. Out of respect for those who take this position, we have sought to add a note to books in our children’s category which have drawings or depictions of Jesus so that they can factor that into their buying decisions, as they would if they could inspect the books physically.
Lauren Chandler is the author of Steadfast Love and Goodbye to Goodbyes. She's also a singer/songwriter, and her albums include The Narrow Place. Lauren is married to Matt, the Lead Pastor of Teaching at The Village Church, Flower Mound, Texas, and is mother to Audrey, Reid, and Norah.
Catalina Echeverri is a Colombian freelance illustrator specialising in children's books. She is based in London, UK, and illustrated the best-selling The Garden, The Curtain and the Cross.

“God always tells the best stories—for adults and for kids. Whatever our age, we need to hear Jesus say again and again, "Take away the stone." Lauren Chandler helped to bring this precious story alive for me in new ways as I saw it through my daughter’s eyes. This book is a sweet gift to parents—for our children and for our own souls.”

“Lauren took one of my favorite stories in the Bible and brought it to life for us. Children and adults will be moved by the love and compassion that Jesus shows towards the people he loves in this story. Thankfully, one day there will be no more goodbyes!”

“As a parent, and as one who has had to say my share of goodbyes, I understand the difficulty of explaining death to children in a way that validates their sadness but also offers hope in the midst of their sorrow. This book is a beautifully helpful reminder that, even though it feels like it, death doesn’t have to be a forever goodbye, because Jesus came to end goodbyes.”
