ave you ever come across words that turn the whole world upside down? Words that take what you thought you knew and reveal just how little you know about the mysterious and glorious workings of God? I felt that way when I read John 14:6 for the hundredth time. “I am the way, and the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). I thought, “A person is the truth? But I thought truth was a concept, a standard, an idea. Jesus, if you’re right, then if I want to know anything truly, I have to know . . . you.”
Jesus turned the world upside down with his words—or maybe he turned it rightside up. When I come across words that testify to his, I’m equally awed. Vern Poythress wrote in his latest book, “The reception of truth involves communion with God.” On the surface, that sentence isn’t too flashy. But think about it. Negatively, it means we can’t receive the truth about anything in isolation from God
Positively, it means our relationship with God plays a role in our knowing anything truly. In other words, truth and God can’t be separated. Truth is not ultimately something; it’s someone (John 14:6). In partnership with The Westminster Bookstore, I sat down with him to talk about his book Truth, Theology, and Perspective.
