Why We Love These Books - y the time I write this my wife and I have already said “no” approximately 237 times today (or so it feels). “No, don’t pull the cord out of the outlet.” “No, don’t throw your food off of your tray.” We want our one-year-old son to know the great news of the gospel and we also want him to obey the Bible’s commands because obedience is good for him. Into this comes the first two books in the new Training Young Hearts series. It may sound like hyperbole, but I can’t think of any other books quite like these. First of all, they are lift-the-flap books (a first for the Westminster Bookstore), with fun, engaging, yet substantive content that makes my son want to grab them off the shelf for us to read to him. Second, they not only teach young kids what is wrong, they help them build a positive understanding of what God created our hands and mouths to do using simple refrains that provide parents with a clear, constructive, and effective tool to use throughout the day. And most importantly, these books show how Jesus used his hands and mouth to pay for our sins on the cross so that we could be forgiven and, through the Holy Spirit, do what is right. In doing so, they provide a model for parents to teach their toddlers obedience that is rooted in the gospel and empowered by the Holy Spirit. There are many people in our constituency who, in a sincere effort to honor the second commandment, refrain from the use of any kind of drawings or pictures of Jesus, even if not intended for a worship context. Out of respect for those who take this position, we have sought to add a note to books in our children’s category which have drawings or depictions of Jesus so that they can factor that into their buying decisions, as they would if they could inspect the books physically.P.S.
