"We studied WWI today! It was sooo confusing with all those alliances and chain reactions. Good thing I read those Nathan Hale books!" This endorsement of the popular series on American history came from the backseat of my van as I drove the kids home from school.
My kids have enjoyed Nathan Hale's Hazardous Tales for years, checking them out from the library over and over again. It was already pretty surprising to me that they'd choose to read and learn about history for fun. Apparently it had also helped one of them make sense of world history. This is the power of the graphic novel.
Graphic novels are a visually engaging form of story-telling which makes them the perfect medium for history and biographies. Before Nathan Hale, I first saw this in my home through The Action Bible. My kids spent countless hours reading it and as a result, could recall the names and stories of Israel's kings better than I could.
