J C Ryle

J. C. Ryle (1816–1900) was an English Anglican bishop, pastor, and author whose clear, practical writing has served generations of Christians. After coming to faith as a young man through the reading of Scripture, Ryle entered the ministry and eventually became the first Bishop of Liverpool in 1880. A committed evangelical and Protestant, Ryle was known for combining strong biblical conviction with direct, pastoral application. He wrote extensively on Christian holiness, the Gospels, church history, and the Christian life, always aiming to make theological truth understandable and useful to ordinary believers. Among his best-known works are Holiness, Practical Religion, Thoughts for Young Men, and his Expository Thoughts on the Gospels. More than a century after his death, Ryle remains widely read for his straightforward style, rich use of Scripture, and persistent call to personal holiness and wholehearted devotion to Christ.
