Samuel Rutherford

Samuel Rutherford (c. 1600–1661) was a Scottish Presbyterian pastor at Anwoth, a professor at St Andrews, and one of Scotland's commissioners to the Westminster Assembly. He wrote Lex, Rex, but he is best loved for his letters, many written during his exile in Aberdeen.

His letters are short, warm, and full of Christ, which makes them the easiest place to start. Read Letters of Samuel Rutherford, or The Loveliness of Christ, a pocket-size book of extracts from them.

For his theology, read Works of Samuel Rutherford, Volume 1, and for quick encouragement, The Fiery Edge of Love. Read more Puritans in Puritan Paperbacks and Thomas Watson, or browse all Puritan books.
