How Can I Be Sure?: And Other Questions about Doubt, Assurance and the Bible (Questions Christians Ask)
Many Christians experience times of doubt and uncertainty. At various times we can ask: “Does God love me?” “Am I really a Christian?”— and even “Is there a God at all?”!
This short, readable book unpacks the difference between good and bad doubt, shows us where it comes from and how to deal with it in ourselves and others. It explains clearly and simply the liberating reality of what the Bible tells us about doubt, assurance and the Christian life.
John Stevens lectured in law at the University of Birmingham before entering full time ministry. He is the National Director of the Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches in the UK, and co-pastor of a church plant in Market Harborough. John is married to Ursula and they have four children.
Endorsements (${ productEndorsements.length })
“This outstanding book on doubt, written as it is by a seasoned Christian pastor, is full not only of realism but also of strong Biblical wisdom. It will provide tremendous encouragement for many and I recommend it wholeheartedly.”
William Taylor
St Helens Church, Bishopsgate
“With typical clarity and insight, John deals faithfully, biblically and sensitively with the doubts that will afflict us all at one time or another. A must read and give away gem of a book.”
Andy Paterson
Mission Director, FIEC
“This new book deals with the question of doubt honestly and helpfully. With a combination of perceptive pastoral insight and incisive biblical thinking, John Stevens helps us to understand that in a fallen world, doubt is not an abnormal aberration for weak Christians. Some of the strongest saints have wrestled with doubts and this has deepened their faith and widened their horizons. John covers all the bases we might expect. This book is highly recommended both for Christians and non-Christians.”
Paul Mallard
Director of Training and Development, Midlands Gospel Partnership
“Insightful, accessible and practical. A concise read for those struggling with doubts, a helpful resource for those counseling those battling with assurance, and a handy book to have on every Christians shelf.”
Tamar Pollard
Childrens Worker, Christ Church Fulwood, Sheffield
“Brilliant! Christians are under fire from every direction and every new accusation and mocking voice pulls away at our confidence and therefore our joy. This book gives us permission to doubt which is a relief in itself. But it doesn't leave us in the mire of doubt, instead it gives us practical, personal and pastoral bible teaching to move us forward with assurance in our wonderful Savior and his true Word. So many Christians lack joy because they lack confidence, this book will help with both!”
Tim Hansen
Chairman Passion4Life
“Though we often struggle to admit it, doubt comes the way of every Christian in the course of their life of faith. This excellent addition to the Questions Christians Ask series will prove an invaluable help to Christians of all ages, tackling as it does a wide range of 'doubt inducing' issues. I warmly commend you read it.”
Trevor Archer
Training Director, The Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches
“This excellent book tackles the important subject of doubt in a helpful and practical way. In the circles I move in doubt is a subject that is not easy to admit to, and therefore a book that tackles the issue head on, as John Stevens' book does, will be of great help.”
Andy Lines
General Secretary, Crosslinks
“Practical, pastoral, and rooted in Christ's work on the cross, and the Spirit's witness in our lives, this book lifts our eyes away from our own shortcomings, and up to what Christ has done for us and in us.”
Martin Salter
Pastor and Keswick speaker
“All Christians struggle with doubt from time to time. The Devil uses it to deprive us of our joy and to stop us serving Jesus wholeheartedly. This is an extremely practical little book that is great to read before doubts come, if you find yourself in the middle of them or if you want to help someone else who is struggling. Highly recommended.”
Marcus Honeysett
Living Leadership
“John writes with customary care and clarity about an often-neglected subject. I hope this pocket-sized anatomy of doubt will be a great reassurance to many.”
Barry Cooper
Speaker and author
“A great series and an excellent resource. Important issues tackled thoughtfully, carefully, thoroughly and biblically. You couldn't ask for anything more. So don't. Buy these and use them well.”
Steve Timmis
Director, Acts 29 Europe
