Everyone dies. No one died like Jesus. Unlike any other person, Jesus knew when he would die. He knew how he would die. He knew what his death would accomplish. Thus, we can be assured that Jesus's last words on the cross were full of meaning--they hold an intentional and redemptive significance.
Anthony Carter and Lee Fowler take a brief, devotional look at each of our Savior's final seven sayings on the cross. These words reveal who Jesus is: the Son of God, Messiah, Shepherd of our souls, Savior of the world. They also tell us who we are to be because of him: forgiven, saved, loved, reconciled, refreshed, complete, and satisfied. The work and words of Christ accomplish and announce the good news of salvation by grace, and our response is the joy of living and loving in light of that good news.
With pastoral care, Carter and Fowler remind us of the moving drama of our salvation and the implications of Christ's words for our lives today.
Lee Fowler is an elder and Sunday school teacher at East Point Church. He and his wife, Ruth, live in East Point with their son, Getch.
Anthony Carter (MA, Reformed Theological Seminary) is lead pastor of East Point Church in East Point, Georgia. He is the author of several books, including Black and Reformed, and is contributing editor of Experiencing the Truth and Glory Road. He is also a frequent conference speaker, guest lecturer, and preacher. He lives in East Point with his wife, Adriane, and their five children.
Endorsements (${ productEndorsements.length })
“Tony Carter and Lee Fowler show us that Jesus’s dying words were not limited by time and space and circumstances but call us today into the reconciling love of Christ, to be completely satisfied in him. This book is good for the soul, reminding us of Christ’s character and instructing us to live out the gospel truths that are infused in Jesus’s last words.”

Bible Teacher; Editor, His Testimonies, My Heritage: Women of Color on the Word of God
“The older I get, the more I see how difficult the Christian life really is. We face trials and temptations both within and without; we struggle with sin; and we face the incessant call of the world to find our joy in temporal things rather than in Jesus. We need help to put one foot in front of the other, to persevere in the Christian life, and to be satisfied in Christ. This is exactly what Tony Carter and Lee Fowler provide in Dying to Speak. By examining the seven sayings of Christ from the cross, Carter and Fowler offer devotional encouragement and combine it with a pastoral challenge to remember that who we are in Christ is grounded in what he has done for us on the cross. As you read this book, your affections will be warmed, your mind stirred, and your whole person motivated to tear down the many idols of our hearts that so easily and so frequently take our eyes off of Jesus. Take and read it, and you will be blessed.”
Guy M. Richard
Executive Director and Associate Professor of Systematic Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary, Atlanta
“With a sermonic character that at times borders on the poetic, Carter and Fowler beautifully expound the final words of Christ and make thoughtful, tender, and challenging gospel application to the mind and heart. I found myself declaring, ‘Hallelujah, what a Savior!’ Dying to Speak is rich food for the soul that the reader will want to feast upon again and again.”
Aaron Messner
Senior Pastor, Westminster Presbyterian Church, Atlanta
“Tony Carter and Lee Fowler, in this powerful and poignant work, draw out the power and purpose of Jesus’s final declarations. As you move through the pages, you cannot help but be confronted with the fact that as Jesus was drawing his last breath, he was breathing new life into us all.”
Anthony T. Pelt
